Merrick Kossack, Research Director of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) at Emergo by UL has been performing human factors engineering for over 25 years, most of that in the medical device industry. At Emergo by UL, Kossack works with medical technology developers to understand their HFE needs, develop strategies to meet those needs, and deliver the necessary HFE services. Immediately prior to joining Emergo by UL, Kossack served as Principal Human Factors Engineer at Intuitive Surgical where he led the human factors engineering efforts developing the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. He has also developed and taught courses on human factors in medical device development and delivered numerous presentations on the subject including integrating human factors into a design and development process and conducting complex validation studies. Kossack is also a contributing author to the recently released book Applied Human Factors in Medical Device Design (2019).
